BENGALS PLAYER MOVE
The Bengals today cleared fourth-year LB Vontaze Burfict to resume practicing with the team. Burfict may practice without counting against the 53-player roster limit for a period of up to 21 days. He remains on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, where he was placed Sept. 5 due to need for continuing rehab of a knee injury.
Burfict could be activated to the roster at any time during the 21-day period, per club decision.
Burfict was the Bengals’ leading tackler in both 2012 and 2013, and he was a Pro Bowl selection for the ’13 season. He played in five games last season. He was placed on the Reserve/Injured list on Dec. 9 of last year, due to a knee injury suffered Oct. 26 vs. Baltimore.
Field Hockey Drops NCAC Contest to DePauw
RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College field hockey team dropped a 6-1 bout to the DePauw Tigers in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) competition at Darrell Beane Stadium on Wednesday.
DePauw (12-4, 11-2 NCAC) took control by scoring three first half goals. The Tigers would stretch their lead to five with two goals in the first ten minutes of the second half.
Junior Megan Hut used a pass from freshman Maite Turlings to score Earlham’s lone goal in the 64th minute. DePauw added the final goal 90 seconds later.
Earlham fired three shots in both the first and the second half for a total of six shots. DePauw had 15 and nine on net. The Quakers did earn seven penalty corners compared to five for the Tigers.
Senior goalkeeper Kate Korobkina made three saves in the loss.
Earlham sits at 4-12 on the season and 3-10 in NCAC play. The Quakers finish their 2015 season with Saturday game against Wittenberg. The game is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
Volleyball Falls to Defiance on Senior Night
RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College volleyball team dropped a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) decision to Defiance 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-18) at Schuckman Court on Wednesday.
The Quakers got off to a fast start in the first set winning five of the first six points of the match. The Yellow Jackets soared back, however, and took set one. After a dropping set two, Earlham found itself tied 8-8 in set three. Defiance won six of the next nine points to take a 14-11 advantage, but the Quakers cut the deficit to two points by forcing the Yellow Jackets into three consecutive attack errors. Ultimately, Defiance used aggressive serving to keep the Quakers out of system and pull away for the set three victory.
Defiance had 13 service aces compared to just four errors on the day. Earlham won the block game, however, with four team blocks compared to three for Defiance.
Individually, freshmen Ashleigh Burton and Denisha Mataia each tallied eight kills with Burton hitting a .294 clip. Mataia, sophomore Kayla Morris, and freshman Jessica Dammeyer each added seven digs to bolster the Quakers’ back row. Senior Britney Ware added three digs in the final home match of her career.
Mereidth Shank led Defiance with nine kills.
Earlham plays the final match of its 2015 season on Saturday at Manchester. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
Women’s Soccer Clipped at Defiance
DEFIANCE, Ohio – Juniors Abby McCollough and Kelly Mayhew both hit the crossbar, but the Earlham College women’s soccer team failed to find the back of the net as Defiance edged the Quakers 1-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action on Wednesday.
Defiance scored the game’s only goal in the 10th minute as a shot from Jillian beat Earlham goalkeeper, senior Ashley (A.J.) Johnson. The Quakers would outshot the Yellow Jackets 10-7 in the first half.
Earlham kept the offensive pressure up in the second half and almost equalized when a Mayhew shot rattled off the crossbar in the 55th minute. Still trailing 1-0 in the closing moments, the Quakers fired three shots in the last 3:30, but none reach goal.
Overall, the Quakers held a 15-13 shots edge including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Defiance goalkeeper June Delgreco was up to the task, however, stopping all five shots. Johnson and freshman Maritza Santos each played a half for the Quakers. Santos made one save in the second session.
Junior Micaela Bush fired six shots with two coming on net. McCollough took three while Mayhew and fellow junior Cherrah Barclay each fired two shots.
Earlham will conclude its 2015 season on Saturday with a 1 p.m. match against first-place Franklin at Matlack Field.
